Stalking on twitter?

This was too good not to share, was posting a support request to twitters get satisfaction page and came across this beaut of a comment (LOL!)

Funny as hell, though it got me thinking. In this age when we broadcast our lives to the world… on Facebook, twitter, Friendfeed etc. what are the risks? Its very easy for an Ex or someone else to obsess. 14 Years ago, when i started on the net i never would have dreamed about giving my real name up. I always used handles on IRC/Forums/MSN etc. Actually i have only started using my real name in the last few years…. what are your thoughts? Is there a danger to it?

  1. I’ve had people google me and email me. That’s the reason that I don’t use my surname on my blog. Also, I keep my Twitter updates private for that reason – have opened them for the duration of the Nokia giveaway.

Also, with my line of work, I’m bound to appear in Google searches. But all the blogs I’ve ever had, had aliases or my first names.

  2. @nafisa was it unwanted attention?

  3. Hahaha! But let’s be fair, he/she deserved that one. Navigating to your ex’s profile is a very deliberate act, as is mousing over and clicking the Follow button.

Plus, why would you be navigating to their profile if you weren’t stalking them in the first place?

  4. yeah, prob just ‘checking up’ on him

  5. You can be stalked on the internet just as much as you can be stalked in real life – I, unlike the privileged few, do not have at my willful disposal a handy invisibility cloak to throw on when I visit the mall! Identity secrecy on the internet is madly over-rated. Besides What’s worse: a suggestive e-mail saying “I’m drooling over your avatar baby” or real actual flowers under your windshield wipers signed “your secret silky stallion xoxo” – and the idiot broke my wipers  by comparison I’ll settle on cyber stalking – there’s always a handy “ignore” button somewhere
