I picked up my Akoha deck yesterday from Carl Spies (Thanks!), i must say i totally love this idea. Doing good, making a difference while tracking the effect that it has.

What is Akoha?

Akoha which is still in beta, issues you a deck of cards with missions on them. The idea is to make a difference in the world. Each card has a unique ID, which can be tracked online. Once you complete the mission you hand it to the person you have played it on. The idea is the cards should spread virally, thereby increasing the good feelings and actions world wide. Examples of missions include things like Donate an hour of your time. I love the concept, and a few years ago during discussions with some friends we had a similar idea. Giving people missions(to do good) in which they would earn points. We never explored it further though.

Completed Akoha Missions

I completed 2 missions on the first day. I was at a restaurant doing work and there was a couple staring into each others eyes, so bought them some strawberry juice and sent them the “Buy a couple in love drinks” card. The response was amazing, smiles broke out etc.

The second mission, on the way home an (oldish) man was stuck and standing out in the rain. Stopped and he said he was out of petrol so offered to take him to a petrol station, and handed him the “Donate an hour of your time” card. He took down my number and kept thanking me.

Though after completing 2 Akoha missions, i some how feel guilty. Its like the motivation is the game and not to do good. I am a firm believer in Altruism for Altruism sake but is it really?

Maybe altruism makes us feel better about ourselves?

I firmly live by the concept “When you give charity with your right hand, your left hand should not know about it”

i.e when you give someone something or do something for them, with altruistic motives by publicizing it i believe it somehow takes away from that action. You should never publicize or even tell people when you give charity/do something or help someone in need.

So yeah, i feel a tinge of guilt every time i complete an Akoha mission.

Do you feel guilty if you publicize your altruistic actions?

P.S i know i am publicizing my missions but the missions are already captured online as well so there is a record.

P.P.S Connect with me at Akoha if you are part of the Beta test.
